Explorers

All about Explorers
Enjoyed your time in the Beavers, Cubs & Scouts? Well the fun shouldn’t end when you reach 14; Explorer Scouts would provide you with the opportunity to do even more exciting stuff together with those friends that you have made through Scouts.

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. Explorer Scouting, although part of the Scout Association, can be quite different to scouts. It tends to be slightly less formal.

Explorer Uniform is much like Scouts but with a stone/beige coloured shirt and the Kingswood Explorer neckerchief (red & black halves). However Explorers in Kingswood don’t wear Explorer uniform every week but a unit T shirt or sweatshirt instead.

Our team of experienced leaders is responsible for the running of each Unit but you will have the opportunity to help plan the annual programme of activities and share in the decision making.

There are many more opportunities for adventurous activities and travel both within the Explorer Unit and at District/County & National level.

What do we do?
Well, the programme tends to be very mixed. We try not to forget the basic skills that we learned in Scouts or Guides such as navigation, pioneering or backwoods and from time to time it comes in handy but we try and have a more varied programme. Usually during a year you’ll get chance to try caving, climbing, canoeing, archery, shooting and hill walking. But it’s not all outdoor stuff; we have discussions and debates, investigate different cultures and do lots of social things like ten pin bowling, silly games, quizzes & challenges. Now and again we’ll try a new craft or skill such as animation.

We also compete in competitions such as Ten Tors (backpacking on Dartmoor), Sun Run (26 miles night race), Rickard Shield (10 mile night navigation), Nigel Day (day orienteering). But if you’re not into hiking you may be keen to join us in the County football competition or District quizzes.

There is plenty of opportunity to work towards awards and badges in Explorers. Unlike Scouts you determine what you’d like to do, whether on your own or with a group of friends, and we give you advice and help. Not everyone in the unit wants to do awards but we currently have a number of people working toward Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards and the Chief Scouts Platinum & Diamond Awards and the Queen’s Scout Award.

 Where’s your nearest unit?
There are 4 regular Explorer Scout Units in
Kingswood and they work closely together to provide a balanced programme of activities, camps & events. This will give you the chance to work with other Explorers in your District, not just your Unit and do many more activities.
